The train journey from the Midwest to southern Florida offers a relaxing alternative to flying or driving. Passengers board in downtown Chicago and travel through the Allegheny Mountains, the Carolinas and central Florida before arriving in the Miami area. As of 2026, this route is served by a temporary train called the Floridian, which combines two older routes into a single direct service. While Amtrak has indicated that the original separate trains should eventually return, the direct option remains in place for now. The trip spans two nights, making it a true long distance rail experience.

Your train options

The Floridian runs daily in each direction between Chicago and Miami. The trip takes about 42 to 51 hours and involves two overnight stays on board. Passengers can choose between standard Coach seats or private sleeping accommodations. If you are travelling on a budget, Coach provides a reclining seat, and you might find our guide on sleeping in coach overnight useful.

For more comfort and privacy, you can book a Roomette, a Bedroom or an Accessible Bedroom. These sleeper classes include access to the dining service, while all passengers can purchase food from the café car. You can read more about the differences in our guide to Amtrak roomettes and bedrooms. As of late 2026, the Floridian is a temporary combination of the Capitol Limited and the Silver Star. This was created because of platform and equipment limits in the Washington area, though the direct service may change in the future.

The journey

The journey begins by crossing northern Indiana and Ohio along the Lake Erie hinterland, a section that is mostly travelled at night when heading southbound. The scenery changes dramatically between Pittsburgh and Washington, DC. Here, the train follows the historic Baltimore and Ohio route through the Allegheny Mountains. You will pass Cumberland and Harpers Ferry, where the Shenandoah River meets the Potomac River.

South of Washington, the train runs through Virginia, the Carolina Piedmont and the Sandhills before reaching the Carolina lowcountry around Savannah. Major stops in this section include Raleigh and Columbia. As the train enters Florida, it passes through Jacksonville and heads into the central lakes region. You will see Orlando, Tampa and the citrus belt before the train turns south along the Atlantic coast cities, passing West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale on the way into Miami.

The stations

Trains depart from Chicago Union Station, located in the West Loop just across the Chicago River. The station opened in 1925 and features a classic Beaux Arts waiting room called the Great Hall. It serves as the hub for most western long distance trains. Premium and sleeping car passengers can use the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge before departure.

The Miami station is located northwest of downtown in Hialeah. Because it is outside the city centre, most passengers continue their journey by taxi, rideshare or bus. Note that Brightline trains use a completely separate station called MiamiCentral downtown.
