The journey

The scenery you see depends entirely on which train you choose and the time of year you travel, as daylight hours vary. Between Pittsburgh and Washington, the train follows the old Baltimore and Ohio route through the Allegheny Mountains. You will travel along the Youghiogheny and Potomac rivers, passing Cumberland and Harpers Ferry.

The Cardinal takes a more southern path, following the Ohio River along its southern bank in Kentucky between Cincinnati and Huntington. The route then enters the New River Gorge between Charleston and Clifton Forge, featuring deep forested canyon walls with stops at Prince and Hinton. Finally, the train crosses the Blue Ridge mountains near Staunton and travels through the Shenandoah Valley area before reaching Charlottesville, Manassas, Alexandria, and Washington.
