The journey

The train travels through diverse landscapes as it moves inland from the coast. Leaving Vancouver, the route follows the Fraser River canyons and the Thompson River canyons. Depending on the time of year and the exact schedule, you might pass through these canyons during the day or at night.

The train makes stops in Kamloops, Blue River, and Valemount before approaching the Canadian Rockies. Between Kamloops and Jasper, the tracks follow the North Thompson River. You will cross the Yellowhead Pass and can look out for Mount Robson, which is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. The trip ends right inside Jasper National Park. Because this is a long distance freight corridor, delays can happen, so you should plan your arrival time with some flexibility.

The stations

Trains depart from Vancouver station, known as Pacific Central Station. This 1919 building serves VIA Rail, Amtrak Cascades, and intercity buses. It is located across the park from the Main Street-Science World SkyTrain station. Southbound Amtrak passengers clear US customs here, while the Rocky Mountaineer uses its own separate station nearby.

The journey concludes at Jasper station, a stone and timber building from 1925 located in the center of Jasper town. It sits inside Jasper National Park and serves The Canadian, the Jasper to Prince Rupert train, and the Rocky Mountaineer. It is a popular stopover for passengers breaking up the longer Toronto to Vancouver trip.
