The trip from the Midwest to Northern California is one of the most famous rail routes in North America. Riding the California Zephyr takes you across the Great Plains, through the heart of the Rocky Mountains, and over the Sierra Nevada. It is a long journey, requiring two nights on the train, but it offers a comfortable way to cross the country without flying or driving. Whether you choose a basic seat or a private room, the train provides a relaxing environment with large windows to watch the changing landscape.

Your train options

The California Zephyr runs daily in each direction as of 2026. The direct trip takes about 49 to 50 hours, meaning you will spend two nights on board. Passengers can choose between standard Coach with reclining seats and leg rests, or upgrade to sleeping accommodations. Sleeper options include the Superliner Roomette, Superliner Bedroom, Family Bedroom, and Accessible Bedroom. If you want more space or a flat bed, reading about Amtrak roomettes and bedrooms can help you decide. Meals in the Dining car are included for sleeping car passengers, while Coach passengers can purchase food. Everyone has access to the Sightseer Lounge car, which features large windows facing upward for better views of the mountains. If you are on a budget, sleeping in coach overnight is possible, but a private room offers much more comfort for a trip of this length.

The journey

Departing Chicago, the train rolls through the farmland of Illinois and Iowa, crossing the Mississippi River at Burlington. Much of the Nebraska section runs at night westbound. The real visual drama begins after leaving Denver. The train climbs into the foothills through a long series of short tunnels, eventually passing under the Continental Divide via the Moffat Tunnel, which is about 6.2 miles long. You will see the Colorado River canyons, including Byers, Gore, Red, and Glenwood canyons, passing areas far from any road. After Grand Junction, the route crosses into Utah desert canyon country, traversing the Book Cliffs and Soldier Summit before descending to Provo and Salt Lake City. The second night usually falls as the train crosses Nevada through Elko, Winnemucca, and Reno. The final stretch over the Sierra Nevada includes the Truckee River, Donner Pass, and a descent past Cape Horn above the American River before arriving in Sacramento.

The stations

The journey begins at Chicago Union Station, located in the West Loop just west of the Chicago River. The Great Hall, opened in 1925, serves as a classic Beaux Arts waiting room. This station is the hub of Amtrak's long distance network, and sleeping car passengers can use the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge. The CTA Blue Line Clinton stop and Metra commuter trains are nearby. You will arrive at Sacramento Valley Station. This restored 1926 station near Old Sacramento is one of the busiest Amtrak stations in the West. Light rail and buses connect to the rest of the city, and the California State Railroad Museum is a short walk away.
