Traveling by train between the Northeast and Central Florida is a popular option for vacationers and regular commuters alike. You can board in Manhattan and step off the next day in Florida without worrying about highway traffic or airport security. The Silver Meteor provides a direct link between these two major destinations. As of 2026, it operates daily and serves as the primary route down the East Coast while other services are suspended. This guide covers everything you need to know about the stations, the onboard experience, and the scenery along the way.

Your train options

The Silver Meteor runs daily in each direction as of 2026. The trip takes about 20 to 25 hours, making this an overnight journey. Passengers can choose between standard Coach seats or upgrade to sleeper accommodations. If you book a sleeper, you can select a Viewliner Roomette, a Viewliner Bedroom, or an Accessible Bedroom. These private cabins provide flat beds for the night and include access to the Dining car for meals. You can read more about these options in our guide to Amtrak roomettes and bedrooms explained. Coach class offers wide, reclining seats with plenty of legroom. If you are traveling on a strict budget, sleeping in coach overnight is a viable choice, though you will need to bring your own food or purchase items from the cafe. Choosing between coach and a sleeper usually depends on your budget and how much you value a private bed.

The journey

The train leaves New York and travels south through major Northeast cities, stopping at Newark, Trenton, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore before reaching Washington, DC. Depending on the time of year, you might pass through this urban corridor in daylight or darkness. South of Washington, the route crosses into Northern Virginia. You will see the Rappahannock River crossing at Fredericksburg before continuing through Richmond and Petersburg. As the train moves through the Carolinas, it stops in cities like Rocky Mount, Fayetteville, and Florence. Between Florence and Savannah, the tracks pass through the Carolina lowcountry, revealing marshes and rivers around Charleston and Yemassee. After crossing into Georgia and stopping at Jesup, the train enters Florida at Jacksonville. The final stretch down to Orlando features Central Florida lakes and orange groves. The train stops at Palatka, DeLand, and Winter Park before arriving at your destination.

The stations

Your trip begins at New York Penn Station and the connected Moynihan Train Hall. Moynihan Train Hall opened in 2021 across Eighth Avenue. Penn Station sits under Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan and is the busiest Amtrak station in the country. It connects easily to subway lines, NJ Transit, and Long Island Rail Road trains. Note that Grand Central Terminal is a separate station for Metro-North commuter trains. You will arrive at the Orlando station, a 1926 Mission Revival building located south of downtown. SunRail commuter trains share this facility. Brightline uses a completely separate station at Orlando International Airport.
