Your train options

The only direct option for this route is the Pennsylvanian, which runs daily in each direction as of 2026. A second daily round trip between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh has been planned, so you should check the current timetable on the Amtrak website for the latest schedules. The journey takes about 9 hours and is a daytime trip, meaning there is no overnight travel on this train. Passengers can choose between Coach and Business Class seating. Coach provides comfortable reclining seats with plenty of legroom. Business Class offers extra space and complimentary non-alcoholic drinks. Both ticket types give you access to the Café car, where you can purchase snacks and light meals throughout the journey. Since there are no sleeper cars, choosing between Coach and Business Class depends on your budget and desire for a bit more space. We recommend booking early to secure the best fares, as outlined in our Amtrak booking tips.

The journey

The journey from New York starts by heading south through Newark and Trenton before reaching Philadelphia. From Philadelphia to Harrisburg, the train passes through the Pennsylvania Dutch farm country around Lancaster. As the train continues west from Harrisburg to Altoona, you will travel along the Juniata River valley, with the ridges of the Appalachians visible on both sides. Assuming you travel during daylight hours, the highlight of the trip occurs just west of Altoona. Here, the train navigates the famous Horseshoe Curve, a historic engineering marvel. The final stretch from Altoona to Pittsburgh follows the Conemaugh River valley through Johnstown and Greensburg. Since this is a daytime service, you should have good visibility of these landscapes for most of the year, though winter trips might see the final hour or two in darkness.

The stations

In New York, Amtrak uses New York station facilities at Penn Station and the connected Moynihan Train Hall, which opened in 2021 across Eighth Avenue. Located under Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan, it is the busiest Amtrak station in the country and connects with subway lines, NJ Transit, and Long Island Rail Road trains. Grand Central Terminal is a separate station for Metro-North commuter trains. You will arrive at Pittsburgh Union Station, where Amtrak uses a modern waiting room under the historic rotunda downtown. This station is the western terminus of the Pennsylvanian and a stop on the Floridian. The Great Allegheny Passage bike trail starts nearby.

Tips

  • Book your tickets a few weeks in advance to secure the lowest Coach fares.

  • Check the departure boards carefully in New York to see if your train boards from Penn Station or Moynihan Train Hall.
  • Keep your camera ready shortly after leaving Altoona to capture the Horseshoe Curve.
