Eating on the train: dining cars, café cars and what to bring
Knowing your food options makes long train journeys much more comfortable, whether you plan to visit the dining car or bring your own snacks.
Train travel across North America offers a variety of food options depending on your route and ticket class. Most western long distance Amtrak trains feature a full dining car with meals cooked on board. If you ride the California Zephyr or the Coast Starlight, you will find these traditional dining cars. Passengers in sleeping cars have dining car meals included in their fare. Coach passengers have access to a café car and can sometimes buy dining car meals when space allows. Understanding the different dining styles helps you plan the right meals for your trip.
Traditional dining on western routes
Most western long distance Amtrak trains feature a full dining car. These cars serve meals cooked on board. Routes like the California Zephyr and the Coast Starlight offer this traditional service. The California Zephyr takes about 51 to 52 hours end to end from Chicago to San Francisco, making hot meals a welcome feature. The Coast Starlight runs from Seattle to Los Angeles in about 35 hours. On these trains, dining car tables are shared with other passengers. This tradition is called community seating. It gives you a chance to meet fellow travelers over breakfast, lunch or dinner. Sleeping car passengers have these meals included in their ticket price. Coach passengers can sometimes buy meals in the dining car when space allows.
Flexible dining on eastern routes
Several eastern long distance Amtrak trains use a different system called flexible dining. Instead of meals cooked to order, these trains serve prepared meals heated on board. This service is designed for sleeping car passengers. The flexible dining menu usually offers a few hot options for lunch and dinner, along with breakfast items. You can choose to eat in the dining car or take your meal back to your room. Since these meals are included in the sleeper fare, you do not have to pay extra for them. Coach passengers on these eastern routes rely on the café car for their food and drinks.
Café cars and snacks
Every long distance train has a café car available to all passengers. This car sells snacks, sandwiches, hot drinks and alcohol. It is the primary food source for coach passengers who cannot access the dining car. The café car stays open for most of the day and evening. You will find a mix of packaged snacks and microwaved hot items like burgers or pizza. Lines can form during standard meal times, so visiting early or late is a good strategy. The café car also provides a place to sit and eat away from your seat.
Dining on VIA Rail
VIA Rail offers a premium dining experience on The Canadian. This train runs from Toronto to Vancouver and takes about four days and four nights end to end. Meals are prepared on board by chefs and served in the dining car. These meals are included for passengers traveling in sleeper classes. The menu changes frequently and features regional ingredients. Just like on Amtrak, tables are shared among passengers. If you have specific dietary needs, such as vegetarian meals, they can usually be accommodated. You should ask when booking your ticket to ensure the kitchen is prepared.
Bringing your own food
Passengers may bring their own food and non alcoholic drinks on board. This is a great way to save money and ensure you have snacks you enjoy. You can pack sandwiches, fruit, crackers and bottled water for your journey. Coolers are allowed, but you must keep them at your seat or in your room. The train staff cannot store or heat your personal food, so plan accordingly. Bringing your own supplies is especially useful for coach passengers on long routes. It provides a reliable backup if the café car runs out of your favorite items.
Quick tips
- Pack plenty of water and non alcoholic drinks to stay hydrated during your journey.
- Ask about vegetarian meals or other dietary needs when you book your ticket.
- Visit the café car outside of peak meal hours to avoid long lines.
- Embrace community seating in the dining car as a way to meet interesting people.
- Bring a small cooler bag for your own sandwiches and fresh fruit.
