The journey

The journey north from Los Angeles begins by passing through the San Fernando Valley. You will then travel along the coastline past Ventura and Carpinteria. The stretch from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo is a major highlight of the trip. Here, the train traces over 100 miles of the Pacific coastline, much of it with no highway in sight, including the Vandenberg area. The route also navigates the Cuesta Grade horseshoe curve. Depending on the time of year and the schedule, some of these coastal views may occur at night or during twilight. After heading inland, the train stops at Paso Robles and Salinas before reaching the Bay Area. Key stops include San Jose, Oakland and San Francisco via Emeryville. Finally, the train travels through Martinez and Davis before arriving in Sacramento.

The stations

Your trip begins at Los Angeles station, which opened in 1939. This landmark features a mix of Mission Revival and Art Deco architecture. It connects to Metro Rail lines, Metrolink commuter trains and the FlyAway bus to LAX airport. The station serves as a terminus for the Coast Starlight, Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited, and is a hub for the Pacific Surfliner. You will arrive at Sacramento station, a restored 1926 building near Old Sacramento. It is one of the busiest Amtrak stations in the West, served by long distance and corridor trains. Light rail and buses connect to the rest of the city, and the California State Railroad Museum is a short walk away.
