Riding the train from New York down to North Carolina offers a relaxed alternative to flying or driving. The route connects the busy Northeast Corridor with the southern Piedmont region. You will pass through major cities like Philadelphia and Washington, DC, before rolling into the Virginia countryside and the towns of North Carolina. Since this is a direct daytime service, you will not need to worry about changing trains or booking a sleeper cabin. The trip takes most of the day, so it is a good idea to read up on first time on Amtrak if you are new to the network.

Your train options

The only direct train on this route is the Carolinian, which operates daily in each direction as of 2026. This service is supported by the state of North Carolina. The trip takes about 11 hours 30 minutes to 14 hours 30 minutes from start to finish.

Because this is a daytime service, there is no overnight travel on this trip and no sleeper cabins are available. Passengers can choose between Coach and Business Class seating. Both classes offer comfortable reclining seats with plenty of legroom. Business Class provides a few extra perks, such as complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and a dedicated car.

Food and drink are available for all passengers in the Café car. You can purchase snacks, light meals, and beverages throughout the journey. Since the trip takes over 11 hours, you might also want to bring your own food on board. If you want to learn more about securing the best fares, read our Amtrak booking tips.

The journey

The Carolinian departs New York and heads south along the Northeast Corridor. Early in the trip, the train stops at major urban hubs including Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, DC. After crossing the Potomac River into Alexandria, the scenery shifts away from heavy industry and dense cities.

From Washington to Raleigh, you will see the Virginia countryside and the historic tobacco towns of eastern North Carolina. The train stops in places like Richmond, Petersburg, and Rocky Mount. South of Raleigh, the route continues through the North Carolina Piedmont. You will pass through the Research Triangle and Greensboro, making stops in Durham, Burlington, and Salisbury before arriving in Charlotte.

Since this is a daytime train, you should have daylight for the majority of the trip, although the final hours into North Carolina might be dark during the winter months. The changing landscape from the Northeast down to the southern Piedmont keeps the long journey interesting.

The stations

Your trip begins at New York Penn Station, located under Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan. Amtrak uses Penn Station and the connected Moynihan Train Hall, which opened across Eighth Avenue in 2021. It is the busiest Amtrak station in the country and connects with subway lines, NJ Transit, and Long Island Rail Road trains. Note that Grand Central Terminal is a separate station for Metro-North commuter trains.

The trip ends at the Charlotte station, which sits north of uptown. A new Charlotte Gateway Station closer to uptown has been under construction. The current station is served by the Carolinian, Piedmont, and Crescent trains.

Tips

  • Book your tickets early to get the lowest fares for Coach or Business Class.
  • Bring your own meals and snacks if you prefer not to rely entirely on the Café car.
  • Double check whether your train departs from the older Penn Station concourse or the newer Moynihan Train Hall in New York.
  • Arrange transport from the Charlotte station in advance, as it is located north of the uptown area.
