It is a reliable state supported service that caters to both business and leisure passengers.

Route overview

Operating daily as of 2026, the Empire Service is supported by New York State. The train runs entirely within the state, traveling about 460 miles from New York Penn Station and Moynihan Train Hall to Niagara Falls. The journey takes about 2 hours 30 minutes from New York to Albany, and the full trip to Niagara Falls takes about 9 hours. This is a daytime train, so there are no overnight sleeper cars.

The service is split in its frequency. There are many trains a day running between New York and Albany. However, fewer trains continue west across the state to Buffalo and Niagara Falls. Passengers traveling the full route will spend a full day on board. The train stops at major cities including Poughkeepsie, Syracuse, and Rochester. You can connect to several long distance routes in New York, and the Lake Shore Limited and Maple Leaf share much of the same track upstate. A seasonal Berkshire Flyer train has also run on some summer weekends from New York to Pittsfield, diverging from the main Empire Service route.

What you see, section by section

New York to Poughkeepsie

Departing from New York, the train soon emerges alongside the Hudson River. This section offers excellent views of the lower Hudson Valley. Passengers will see the steep cliffs of the Palisades across the water. The train passes under the Tappan Zee bridge and navigates the curves of the Hudson Highlands. For the best Hudson river views, sit on the left side of the train when heading north and the right side when heading south. This part of the journey is entirely in daylight on most schedules.

Poughkeepsie to Albany

After leaving Poughkeepsie, the train continues its run along the eastern bank of the Hudson River. The scenery opens up into the wider mid Hudson valley. Passengers looking across the river to the west will see the outline of the Catskill Mountains in the distance. The tracks run very close to the water in several places, passing small marinas and historic lighthouses. The journey up to Albany remains scenic and is usually completed in daylight.

Albany to Niagara Falls

Beyond Albany, the train turns west and leaves the Hudson River behind. The route follows the historic path across upstate New York. Passengers will travel through a series of industrial cities and smaller canal towns, including Schenectady, Amsterdam, Utica, and Rome. The landscape features rolling farmland, forests, and rivers. The train eventually reaches the larger cities of Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo before terminating at Niagara Falls. Depending on the time of year and the specific departure, the final hours of this westbound trip may happen after dark.
